Residents of Niamey show their support for the coup d’etats in Niger

Hundreds of people on Thursday responded to a call by coup leaders in Niamey, the capital of Niger, to rally in support of rebel soldiers who claim they have seized power in a coup, security situation is deteriorating in this West African country.

Some waved Russian flags, echoing similar protests held after the coups in neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso.

“The most important thing is that Niger is re-established, the most important thing is Niger regain all our sovereignty, the most important thing is for us Tahirou Guimba, a Nigerian politician who participated in the protest, said.

A day earlier, protesters had expressed their support for President Mohamed Bazoum.

Bazoum defiantly declared on Thursday that democracy would prevail.

While many people in the capital Niamey continue their usual business, it is not clear who controls the country and which side the majority might favor.

The country was once considered a partner. the last major battle against extremism in the French-speaking region, where anti-French sentiment paved the way for the Russian private military group Wagner.
